• Aids in fiber digestion, using its hyphae to help separate the fiber particle. This allows fiber-digesting bacteria to colonize and digest fibers more easily, producing volatile fatty acids (VFAs) that are a vital energy source for the horse.
• Expels oxygen pockets in the intestine, which would otherwise be toxic to many beneficial microbes.
• Outcompetes lactic acid-producing microbes, and encourages the growth of those that can use lactic acid, thus helping to reduce the likelihood of a decrease in the pH of the hindgut that can disrupt the delicate balance of the microbiome.
