An increase in body temperature, due to exercise, travel, or high ambient temperature, will cause the horse to sweat. The evaporation of this sweat helps the horse cool down and regulate its body temperature.

Sweating results in fluid loss, as well as the loss of body salts or electrolytes contained in the sweat.

Therefore, it is important to maintain hydration and replace lost electrolytes not only for elite competition horses but for all horses and ponies that sweat after work - from Pony Club rallies to long hacks in summer, to international competitors, show jumpers, and dressage horses!

Key electrolytes include sodium and chloride, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, and they play many key roles in the body, especially muscle contraction, the nervous system, and maintaining water balance around cells.

Because a horse's sweat contains a higher concentration of sodium and chloride than its other body fluids, it is important that additional electrolytes be provided at correct concentrations to ensure that the desire to drink is maintained, so that both water balance AND electrolyte losses can be restored, to promote rehydration and recovery, and ensure continuous optimal performance.

This is particularly important during long journeys, or longer shows and events, when fatigue will increase and performance will decrease if electrolyte and water balance (rehydration) are not restored.

Research has shown that just 1% dehydration can impair performance.

Apple Lytes Paste has been carefully formulated to begin replacing key electrolytes and encourage drinking to help support rehydration and maintain optimal performance.

Apple Lytes should not be administered on an empty stomach but should be given at appropriate intervals during long-distance travel. After exertion, once cooled and calm, the horse should be offered a small fiber feed or access to forage before administering the Apple Lytes paste.

Instructions for use

• For horses weighing 400 to 600 kg: 15 ml per day for lighter work, 30 ml per day for horses in heavier work sweating heavily. Administer into the horse's mouth on the back of the tongue. Maximum 30 ml per day.
